Too Bad that Algebra Application Problems Have Not Changed Much Through Recorded History, however...

However, in Dan Meyers' blog post,  Same and Different as it Ever Was, you'll find a link to a fascinating 1909 book: Problems Without Figures for 4th to 8th Grade, that features 309 arithmetic problems that don't include any numbers!
